Exam Schedule
Canada Branch offers exams annually in April and November, so students can take their exams in a location convenient for them. Annual exam schedules are posted in September.
Exam Locations
Students registering through the Canada Branch Office, can write at the following approved Exam centers, located at:
- Montreal: Shipping Federation of Canada, 326-300 St. Sacrament Street, Montreal, Quebec
- Vancouver: ICS Canada Branch, 100-1111, West Hastings Street, Vancouver, British Columbia.
If any of these locations are not workable, then the student should contact Head Office of ICS London to arrange some other agreed venue, and invigilator. Alternate locations must be arranged well in advance.
Depending on the number of students, some exam locations can be bundled. Before you select location to write exams, please check with ICS Canada Branch or ICS Head Quarters.
Registration and Entry
Student Registration Form 2018-2019
Once the student has confirmed their exemptions and chosen the subjects to study, the student will need to register with the Institute and enter for the desired exams. The student must register every year that examinations are taken and sit exams in either November or April session or both.
Choose your subjects and how you wish to study:
- TutorShip, the Institute’s distance learning course;
- Using your local Institute Teaching Centre (ITC);
- Self-study using the Institute’s course books.
Online registration
The Institute’s next academic year opens on 1st August 2018
To sit an exam with the Institute during the 2018/19 academic year, you will need to register as a student. This can be done after 1st August online at www.shipbrokers.org.

After 1st August:
New students – If you have not registered before with the Institute then you can use www.shipbrokers.org to manage your new student account with the Institute. As a new student you will need to register by clicking on the Register button at the top of the page at www.shipbrokers.org.
Returning students – If you are a student who has previously taken exams with the Institute you will have a login username and password already created, this means you can start registering as a 2018/19 student, this can be done online at www.shipbrokers.org. Simply use your registered email address, requesting a new password via the ‘Forgot Password’ button.
Please email enquiries@ics.org.uk, if you are unsure to obtain these details. You must include your student number, date of birth and your email address used at the time of your last registration, so that the Education team can quickly locate your records.
Once registered online, you can manage your own account, update your contact information (this information is only used by the Institute to send important information), and also view previous years exams as well as other information related to your profile, such as any subject exemption granted.

*Depending on the nature of the request, the Institute reserves the right to charge multiples of this fee covering additional administration required to complete the request satisfactorily.* Please note that for exams taken in the Canadian Examination Centers fees may be paid in Canadian dollars if registration is done through the Canada Branch.
Students may also register with Head Office in UK and pay directly to ICS in London.
Exemptions
Candidates with relevant professional or educational qualifications may apply for exemptions for a maximum of three subjects. Exemptions are only available to registered students of the Institute each academic year, for example, between August and May each year.
The exemption fee for 2018/19 is £170 GBP per subject and must be paid by 31st May 2019.
Evidence of qualifications in the form of a certificate will be required to support any application. Exemptions are only granted towards the PQE qualification and not towards the Foundation and Advanced Diplomas.
The following subjects can be exempted:
– Introduction to Shipping
It is possible to obtain an exemption from Introduction to Shipping if you have worked in the shipping industry for 2 years or for 1 year if you have also passed the Institute’sUnderstanding Shipping course. A letter of evidence from your employer will be required.
– Economics of Sea Transport and International Trade
– Marine Insurance
– Shipping Law
– Shipping Finance
Exemptions are overseen by the Institute’s Education and Training Committee (ETC). If you have a maritime qualification that is not listed on this page, the ETC will assess the qualification provided it meets the following criteria:
- the course must be maritime related and equivalent to the Institutes Professional Qualifying Examinations (minimum standard of a lower second class (or equivalent) UK degree)
- the qualification can be no older than seven years
- you must be able to provide an official course certificate and transcript in English or a certified English translation
- the course must be examined in English
